Davidson is a charming lakeside town on Lake Davidson in northern Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. It is located 20 miles north of Charlotte, NC. The history of the town is inextricably linked to Davidson College from which it takes its name.
At present, Davidson College remains a vital part to the town's identity. Davidson has long been known as pedestrian and bicycle friendly.
This small college town was given official recognition as a Walk Friendly Community.
Residents and visitors can walk around the town and enjoy more than 12 miles of green-ways and bike lanes, parks, national arboretum, and beautiful scenery throughout town.
Davidson’s main street offers an assortment of shops, restaurants, wide sidewalks and a public library.
You can find an enticing array of antiques, books, clothing and souvenirs in Main Street Davidson. Also, you can stop by for a quick bite in the restaurant row filled with flavorful diners.
For art lovers, they will surely love the galleries, craft stores and exhibit spaces like the Whistling Swan, the Needlecraft Center and the rotating exhibits at the Belk Visual Arts Center.
The noteworthy Davidson College is consistently known as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country. The tree lined campus is filled with picturesque classical architecture which sets apart Davidson from other communities.
Lake Davidson straddles the Mecklenburg/Iredell county line along the I77 corridor and is approximately 341 acres. It is in the Catawba-Wateree watershed and is a part of Lake Norman via a culvert below I77. (In comparison, Lake Norman totals approximately 32,475 acres.)
Lake Davidson and Lake Norman do not connect, making Lake Davidson the perfect lake to use for small motor boats, kayaking, canoes, water skiing, wake-boarding and fishing.
And, to the south of Lake Davidson is Lake Cornelius, which is approximately 125 acres. Ultimately, if you want to plan on Lake Norman, you are just a couple of miles to it's nearest access point.
Davidson’s system of urban parks, trails, programs, athletic facilities and green space is a major contributor to the town’s high quality of life.
The town has four miles of paved green-way and bike path trails to promote an active community through walking and cycling.
Davidson's growth can be attributed to the tremendous development around Charlotte which stimulated the current population to almost 11,000 people.
Local downtown businesses characterized by restaurants and specialty shops, cater to this new market. One of the most popular stops in the area is the Davidson Farmer's Market, which can compete with the best of them.
In the earlier centuries, Davidson’s growth typified small railroad towns throughout the Piedmont. The establishment of Davidson College influenced the development of the town.
The prestigious Davidson College has made the town an intellectual and cultural center which increased the growth of sizable professional class.
