Steele Creek has taken on a mind of it's own! Located 15 minutes southwest of Charlotte, the Steele Creek area was always prone to slow growth. Those days are gone with new infrastructure and exceptional developments filling the residential needs of SW Charlotte.
The Steele Creek Community is considered to be south of the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport and west of Sugar Creek and I-77, covering about 46 square miles. Other main arteries in the area include Shopton Road West, South Tryon (HWY 49), York Road, Westinghouse (primarily a commercial/industrial area), Steele Creek Road (HWY 160), and Carowinds Blvd. HWY 160 wraps things up around the southern edge as it blends into Fort Mill and Lake Wylie.
Travel time to the The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is less than a 15 minute drive. Another highlight of the area is the Charlotte Regional Farmer's Markert - it is the largest fresh food market in the region and is located on York Road.
As for the commute time to uptown Charlotte - this is a straight shot up HWY 49 (S. Tryon) - 15 minutes most times of the day, and less than 30 minutes during peak traffic times.
Most residential and commercial development continues to be concentrated along the South Tryon Street corridor, but several large new residential communities are being developed in the western fringes of Steele Creek. As the area has matured, more housing styles and large residential developments have come to fruition. Three of these are highlighted below, starting with Berewick:
Berewick is a magnificent, master-planned community featuring a collection of villages in a park-like setting. Each village has a specific home style set forth by the multiple builders that participated in the development of Berewick.
Currently, the Town Center is anchored by Harris Teeter, Walgreens, and multiple restaurants as well as a local gas station and the Hampton Inn.
Berewick has six acres devoted to recreation areas, with the The Manor House and Community Swimming Pool at its core. Berewick will ultimately be a pedestrian friendly mixed-use community clustered around a Town Center. See proposed Berewick Development Plans, here.
The proposed Berewick District Park will have 195 acres of soccer fields, baseball fields, basketball courts, bike trails, picnic areas, playgrounds and a dog park. The Berewick Elementary school is adjacent to the community.
The Palisades is a master-planned development carved into 1500 acres of gently rolling hills and woodlands. It offers 14 distinct neighborhoods and over 4 miles of walking trails, located just North of Lake Wylie in SW Charlotte.
The various neighborhoods were built by a handful of builders involved in the development of The Palisades. Each of the 14 neighborhoods have their own Home Owner Association - with varying amenities and fees.
The neighborhoods vary in structure, for instance, some of the homes will be inside their own gated communities with a pool and playground; the one Toll Brothers has is uniquely positioned to be in line with the Active Adult community - providing a community pool, clubhouse, pickle ball court, and access to Lake Wylie via a Kayak launch and storage area. Still, others, have more typical community settings with no gates - just pretty house on nice lots. The most luxurious of the Palisade neighborhoods is located directly across the street from the Members Only Clubhouse. This is a small enclave of custom homes in a gated community. Overall, the 14 neighborhoods blend into the winding roads and backdrop of The Palisades. It is a beautiful community.
The Palisades also has a state of the art soccer complex, featuring seven lighted fields in a pristine natural environment befitting the Palisades name. It is also home to the Charlotte United youth soccer league.
If you like, you can apply for Private Membership at The Palisades Main Clubhouse. This will give you access to the Jack Nicklaus Golf Course, the Wimbledon-style grass and regulation hard court Tennis complex, along with the water park-style swimming pool and private fitness center.
The Sanctuary is a luxurious lakeside community on the shores of Lake Wylie (Charlotte side). The wooded home-sites range from two to 13 acres in size and have some very grand estates built upon them.
The Sanctuary will ultimately have just 200 families in the 1,350 acre community; by design, only 20 per-cent of the land will ever be developed.
The lifestyle envisioned for residents of The Sanctuary is a peaceful one, with easy access to neighboring Charlotte, and Lake Wylie.
The Camp & John James Audubon Lodge offer a central gathering place with a 17-acre waterfront amenity area with swimming pools, tennis courts, fitness center, and a launch area for canoes and kayaks.
The community also has over 20 miles of wooded nature and shoreline trails along with observation points, and small parks. A full-time activity director arranges events at The Lodge.
Steele Creek has Carowinds within it's boundaries. This is a large amusement park with lots of rollercoasters! It also has the Carolina Harbor Waterpark and Camp Snoopy specifically for kids. During off-season, Carowinds has creative holiday events, specifically, Scarowinds and Winterfest.
Many of the community clubhouses will have their own fitness centers, but on the outside chance you just want a gym to call your own, there are plenty to choose from, including the Steele Creek YMCA, Synergy Yoga, The Peaceful Dragon (for marital arts) and the Title Boxing Club in Ayrsley.
The Charlotte Greenway system is another area to stay fit and stress-free as is nearby McDowell Nature Preserve at Lake Wylie. Offering miles of trails, nature and Lake Wylie access for kayaking and canoes.
Major shopping has really helped to put the icing on the cake for Steele Creek residents. The Rivergate Mall gives you the best of it all, with Super Target, Best Buy, Marshall's, Home Goods and Home Depot as some of it's anchor stores.
The Rivergate Mall incorporates big brand stores, local wine shops, and plenty of options in dining. Rivergate is quite possibly becoming Steele Creek's new area town center.
There are also multiple retail strip malls that have filled the rest of the area up with grocery stores, salons, pizza parlors, and the this-and-that's needed for every day life.
And for mega savings, Steele Creek is within minutes of the Carolina Premium Outlet Mall, which is located off of Shopton Road.
The Carolina Premium Outlet Mall is home to 100 notable upscale outlet stores including Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, Gap Outlet, Kate Spade New York, Lucky Brand, Michael Kors, Nike Factory Store and Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th.
The Ayrsley development is a cool little pedestrian-friendly development that incorporates upscale town-homes, apartments, village shopping, office space and a lot of great restaurants as well as it's own movie theater and hotels. It is located near I-485 at South Tryon, making it a breeze to get anywhere in Charlotte in less than 30 minutes.
Ayrsley has unique offerings such as The Piedmont Social House, featuring a selection of bars, bowling and billiards. It is also home to the Portofino's Italian eatery - it's third location in Charlotte.
The Steele Creek area is definitely a melting pot and with that, comes a lot of great family owned restaurants bringing their authentic cuisine to the locals. A few of note, would include Vietnamese food at Pho Cali, Soul Food at La'Wan's, Cuban food at A Piece of Havana, Don Pedro's for Mexican fare.
Those of you that want to be close to uptown Charlotte, have easy access to shopping and travel venues, buy a nice property at an affordable price, may find that Steele Creek is the perfect place for you to call home.
