Lake Wylie is a beautiful man-made lake bordering both North and South Carolina. It covers more than 13,000 acres of water and over 300 miles of shoreline and has an average depth of 20 feet.
Lake Wylie is a popular recreational destination for residents of nearby cities including Belmont, Charlotte, Fort Mill, and Rock Hill.
Known for it's bass tournaments, Thursday night fishing competitions, Friday night water shows put on by Carolina Show Ski Team and its exceptional Fourth of July fireworks display, Lake Wylie is a great place to find a home!
As for location, if you live in the northern area of Lake Wylie (towards the North Carolina side), the drive time to the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, Uptown Charlotte and South Charlotte will typically be 30 minutes or less - depending on the time of day.
Lake Wylie offers peaceful living and breathtaking views in somewhat of a rural setting.
The busiest spot on Lake Wylie is T-Bones which is a waterfront restaurant. Here you can enjoy bands, dining and drinks in a casual setting overlooking Lake Wylie, that allows for indoor and outdoor dining.
Behind the T-Bones restaurant is the Buster Boyd Bridge Access Area. This is a very large boat launch and landing area with easy access just as you cross over the Buster Boyd Bridge.
Besides T-Bones, there are several other restaurants, stores and gas stations within walking distance of the landing.
Although there are quite a few developments as well as houses on the lake, below are two of the largest developments in the Lake Wylie area. Tega Cay is actually a town, with the central hub being the Tega Cay Country Club. And, River Hills is just past the Buster Boyd Bridge.
River Hills is a gated community with 24 hour private security and guards at the front gate. River Hills has an 18 hole Championship golf course, three swimming pools, a fully equipped fitness center and 10 tennis courts, as well as a pickle-ball set up. It also has top notch on-site emergency medical services.
The River Hills Clubhouse has multiple dining areas, both casual and formal. The social director keeps a full line-up of activities happening throughout the year.
The River Hills Marina is also located on site.
It has 209 boat slips, a gas dock, a covered pavilion (on Joe's Bay - this holds 200), and plenty of parking for those that don't own a waterfront home or have a deeded pier of their own. (You do not have to live in River Hills to be a member of the River Hills Marina.)
The River Hills Marina is actually home to Pier 88. Pier 88 at Lake Wylie has a ship store and the Galley snack shack.
Often referenced as The River Hills Country Club, the actual community is named River Hills Plantation and is anchored by the club. Homes for sale in River Hills range from condos and town-homes, to single family residences with golf course lots or waterfront lots, all told, there are approximately 1100 residences. For those that are not "on the water" River Hills has various access points to get one to the lake.
There is also a section of lakeside villas and patio homes, that have easy access to the Southpoint Park. The park is a open all year long, and features 3 acres of protected land.
Located on the Lake Wylie shoreline, it offers a sandy beach perfect for volleyball, multiple picnic tables and benches as well as stocked firepits, playground equipment and restrooms.
Another unique feature specific to River Hills, is their public gardens. There is a large section of the neighborhood devoted to those that want to participate in growing their own - flowers, fruit and vegetables prevail. Nearby, is a shaded area which is home to the River Hills playground and basketball court.
Camp Thunderbird, a Lake Wylie YMCA- operated summer environmental camp, attracts children from far and wide as is located at the entrance to River Hills.
Here, you will also see an equestrian center, with horses poking their heads over the fence, when camps are in session.
Developed in the 1970s, Tega Cay, is a town located on a large peninsula of Lake Wylie. The town offers a variety of housing, including golf course and waterfront homes for sale. Tega Cay is located 20 minutes south of Charlotte, and borders up to Fort Mill.
The Tega Cay Country Club is a full service club featuring a semi-private 27 Hole Championship Course, Four Hard
Court Tennis Courts with a Pro Shop and a Croquet Lawn. Across from Tega Cay's practice greens is the event pavilion designed specifically for handling large parties and events.
Adjacent to the Tega Cay Clubhouse is a 23,000 square foot Glennon Community and Conference Center; the perfect setting for a perfect event.
The town of Tega Cay offers an incredible lakeside life style. At the top of the list would be many parks in the area. The Heron Park, Diamond Head Park, Koala Park, Palmyra Park have playgrounds, park benches and some with grills.
Most of the parks connect to Tega Cay's trails, which take you throughout the area. Below is a detailed list of the other parks in the town of Tega Cay at Lake Wylie:
The McDowell Park and Copperhead Island offer a variety of recreational amenities including 56 campsites, Lake Wylie access, a beach volleyball, horseshoes, restrooms, and nature trails. Allison Creek and Nivens Creek Boat Landings are additional areas to launch your boats.
