Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in North Carolina. This beautiful lake was named after former Duke Power president Norman Cocke. It was created as part of the construction of the Cowans Ford Dam by Duke Energy.
Lake Norman is surrounded by the towns of Cornelius, Davidson, Denver, Huntersville, Mooresville, Sherrill's Ford, and Troutman. These charming towns offer a wide selection of leisure amenities for visitors and guests.
Lake Norman is our largest area lake and borders five counties, so it does get busy with boat traffic. It can handle quite a bit, as the lake is 34 miles long with 520 miles of shoreline.
All sorts of boats, pontoons, yachts and jet skis are allowed, but you will have to abide by these Lake Norman Boating Regulations.
There are lake restrictions, setbacks and buffer zones. The water level on Lake Norman ideally should be at 760ft. That is considered “full pond”.
For modifying, dredging or construction of docks/piers, you will need to follow a very stringent process, you can find out the Lake Norman dock and pier building restrictions here.
The areas surrounding the shores of Lake Norman, offer a variety of luxury and casual living options.
Enjoy true luxury living in Trump National at The Point or The Peninsula Country Club in Cornelius - for more casual lakeside living, check out the sleepy bedroom communities of Troutman and Sherrill's Ford. With the size and cities surrounding Lake Norman, you're bound to find an area that suits your lifestyle best.
As for the weather, the Charlotte area (as a whole) has four distinct seasons with the Spring and Fall seeming to last the longest. The mild climate allows one to get good use out of water sports and outdoor activities all year long - most assuredly between April and October.
Lake Norman’s natural beauty, picturesque towns and flourishing economies, makes Lake Norman a unique and enticing place to live - a beautiful place to call home.
The towns of Cornelius, Davidson and Huntersville are working together to ensure regional cohesiveness and are also the towns located closest to Charlotte's city center.
The towns established the Lake Norman Economic Development, a nonprofit organization responsible for the planning and implementation of economic development strategies in the Lake Norman region.
The organization aims to attract new capital investment and create new, highly skilled jobs for the residents.
The town of Mooresville is a large city where you'll find everything you need without making a trip to Charlotte - which from Mooresville is a 33 mile drive. Nonetheless, driving to Charlotte for a Panthers football game or to enjoy the Broadway Lights series at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center, can still be handled in a 45 minute drive time.
The southern most tip of Lake Norman is 25 miles north of Charlotte and within easy reach of the Concord Regional Airport and the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
